This makes sense to me: You have a dual-NAND setup, 4.11 and 3.55 which has a custom loader that does nothing but peek the entire ram space and write to USB. Boot into 4.11, boot a retail game, PS3 decrypts the .self into ram. Pull the cell_reset line and switch NANDs, it reboots without clearing ram into your custom loader, dumps the ram, you find the .elf in a hex editor, re-encrypt to 3.55 self, and voila.
